Amanda Halverson

My ink is all about humans’ connection to nature. I have 4 animals (lion, fox, peregrine falcon, sloth), various plants, and Artemis.

What inspired your most recent tattoo?

My last tattoo was Artemis, the ancient Greek goddess of the hunt. Out of all the Greek gods, Artemis always stood out to me as a woman who was independent, didn’t adhere to society’s standards of how a woman should be, and prioritized her connection with the natural world and her female relationships, taking care of the nymphs under her protection. She inspired me to take up archery, which is still one of my favorite hobbies today.

If your ink could speak, what would it say?

Don’t lose your connection to the natural world. We feel removed from it in our homes and driving in our cars to our offices. As separated as we feel we are from it, we are of nature, and we would feel more in balance individually and as a society if we remembered that and put effort into retaining that connection. So, yeah, maybe go out and touch grass every once and awhile.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would take my mom to Italy. Her father and his side of the family came over from Sicily, but she’s never been able to go herself, so I’d take her on an all expenses paid trip around the country.
