Diego Padilla

A play in life & death, my tattoos reflect on the masks we use to express or hide ourselves. They were designed with a Costa Rican artist.

What inspired your most recent tattoo?

My back piece show two aspects of my personality: a Raven holding a Dottore mask showing my careful nature vs a Fox holding a Kitsune mask, showing my mischievous side. The tattoo is also inspired in the "Raven and Fox" Aesop story that reminds me we shouldn't let compliments cloud our judgment. If you let your pride or vanity control you, you might end up losing something valuable. As an avid traveler, the styles also honor European vs Asian influences that I admire.

If your ink could speak, what would it say?

We are all here on a journey to explore ourselves and what the world offers. My tattoos have been carefully thought to represent what I have learned and experienced so far. I like deeply personal art and I have always respected the viewpoint of the tattoo artist and I carry it with me truly celebrating their artistic expression. I chose each design to represent a milestone in my life journey and a lesson learned. Each tattoo a representation of an expectation or a liberation.

What would you do with the $25,000?

My family has been struggling financially since the pandemic. I am the sole provider of my family at the moment and this prize would really help us stay afloat for a little bit longer.
