Mimi Nguyen

I love Japanese Art and culture so most of my pieces are centered around the Japanese Hannya Mask folklore.

What inspired your most recent tattoo?

Delving deeper into the folklore, it’s about a woman so consumed with rage and jealousy from unrequited love that she transforms into a demon herself. This tells a story of never allowing your emotions to take control of your life. My most recent piece features a realistic skull encompassed in chrysanthemum petals. The skull to me represents the inevitability of death and serves as a reminder for me to live a meaningful life.

If your ink could speak, what would it say?

If my ink could speak, it would tell a beautiful story of loss, hardship, heartbreak, and uncertainty etching deep lines into the soul. So much so that the body started to reflect the emotions felt inside. Once the ink became alive on skin and through the pain, over time, the pain teaches appreciation—for the courage to keep going, the love we give and receive, and the meaning we carve out from all we’ve endured.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I have a 13 year old beautiful daughter that aspires to be a graphic novelist. I would invest in her and help realize those dreams for her.
