Rene Castillo

My ink tells my story. It is a true map of me. Every piece holds a memory, a struggle, or truth. It’s more than art, it’s my raw life story.

What inspired your most recent tattoo?

My art encompasses pieces from other artists that I respect and represent, such as Takashi Murakami, Kaws, and local artists here in AZ and CA. My most recent pieces are Murakami flowers that I scattered throughout my body. To me, flowers represent the hardships I've experienced and the growth I've made. Flowers mean renewal and the blossom of new beginnings.

If your ink could speak, what would it say?

My ink tells the story of my journey. You can see that I’ve experienced pain and hurt and find joy in nature and the beauty of the world. You can see the things that make me smile and make life a little less serious. As I continue to add more tattoos, I gain more experience towards my goals. As you look closer at my flash work, you can see how it all works together to show the world who I am. You can see that I kept on practicing and learning new techniques to make myself feel more confide

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I win the $25,000, my plan is to get a vehicle so that I can expand my ability to share my tattooing talent with others. Sharing a car has been a hardship for my family and I. I’d like to be able to put money down on a house.
