A friend of mine shared my name from our hometown, she passed away from an overdose rather suddenly. I come from a family of addicts, she did not, and its always felt like that should’ve been me. I celebrated our 23rd bdays (3days apart) with a tribute to Pink Floyd, her favorite band. “The Wall” is in my half sleeve.
If your ink could speak, what would it say?For every memorialized trauma and celebration we only add to her mystique— as she gets softer and heals, the more these tattoos feel like a hug from past versions of herself. One day we’ll be like a roadmap of her entire life, happy, sad, painful, confusing and enraging. But we help her process these things and grow.
What would you do with the $25,000?I would pursue my visa to go to graduate school in the UK or Australia. I want to become a woman’s rights lawyer, not only pushing for progress, but representing a new generation of professionals that can also express themselves in settings we were not previously allowed to enter. I want to prove that my intelligence is not lacking because I choose to have art on my body.
